What does your client focus on? Client is focused on connecting students with active learning. They create thinkers and creatives within the field of science. They’re teaching to be curious and innovative. What do you want the space to feel like? I want the space to feel like you’re walking through the woods. Playing up on the fine details of the undergrowth and the compression and cradling feeling of the tree canopies over head. As if entering a clearing or meadow in the forest, the great room expands upwards offering views and a breath of cleansing air. What elements do you want? I want the interior to be monochrome with a strong directional axis. Within the segmented spaces out of the main room, the feeling will be more personal and comfortable with some pops of color. I want level five white wall finishes with satin oil finished walnut accents. The floor will be dark charcoal gray concrete with a semi-gloss finish. Some walls will be matte and semi-opaque, playing with shadows and light. Lights will be playful with high-reflectivity and completely transparent. Within the sectioned off rooms, they will play with organic patterns and color on the floor. Are there common elements/ shapes? The clean, white linear walls will be contrasted by translucent organic circular shapes. Are all of the levels the same? The levels will follow the same concept and will be differentiated by colors. The first floor will be the darkest- similar to the amount of light that radiates through trees. Is the space artsy? Scientific? Heavily Branded? The space is light and airy with watercolor influence and Japanese calligraphy lines. Organized chaos. What spaces need branding? (fast/ slow/ transitory/ waiting area/ large/ small/ busy)
The spaces that will need branding will be the transitory spaces. Where do you want people to gather/ move through? The two axis points are the main transitory spaces. What objects do you want to use? I want to play up on commonly seen items on the campus and re-appropriate them. Specifically the empty beakers. The class visited the site for a 2 night overnight in order to interview the staff and students and to do a site analysis. Below are photos from the trip and a presentation site analysis. |
